U.S. Representatives Don Bacon and Josh Gottheimer have called for clarity from the administration regarding a recent agreement with Houthi forces. The bipartisan group, led by Bacon and Gottheimer, sent a letter to President Trump and Acting National Security Advisor Marco Rubio seeking details about the May 6 deal with the Iranian-backed Houthis.
The agreement halts U.S. strikes against the Houthis but does not address ongoing threats to Israel. The Houthis have declared their intent to continue targeting Israeli civilians despite the U.S. deal. “On May 4 — just two days before this deal was struck — a Houthi missile reached Israeli territory, injuring six and disrupting operations at Israel’s primary international airport,” stated members of Congress in their letter to President Trump and Acting National Security Advisor Rubio.
The letter urges close engagement with Israeli partners to ensure any diplomatic or military arrangements protect Israel’s security interests without empowering Iranian proxies. Members of Congress emphasize their responsibility to ensure American military force is authorized and effective strategically. They request a timely briefing that supports allies, restores deterrence, and reaffirms global leadership.
Tyler Stapleton from FDD Action remarked on the issue, stating: “The Houthi threat to global shipping cannot be separated from the danger this terrorist group continues to pose to U.S. forces in the region as well as to our allies like Israel.” He emphasized addressing Iran’s financial assistance and weapon transfers to the Houthis for a long-term strategy.
Representatives Tom Suozzi, Dan Goldman, and Greg Stanton also signed the letter seeking more information on how the agreement impacts Israel’s security and Iran’s support for the Houthis.
The full text of the letter outlines concerns over continued aggression by Houthis toward Israel following sustained operations by U.S. forces in Yemen. It calls for an examination of Iran’s supply routes to the Houthis and insists on measures that target Tehran’s supply lines effectively.
