Creighton University’s baseball team defeated South Dakota State University 11-5 on March 25, powered by a seven-run second inning. The win brings Creighton’s record to 11-11, while South Dakota State falls to 7-18.
The game was decided early when junior catcher Connor Capece hit a solo home run to start the Bluejays’ offense. Chris Baillargeon and Rocco Gump followed with singles, and two consecutive walks pushed the score to 2-0. An RBI grounder from Teddy Deters made it 3-0 before Ben North drove in two runs with a single and Isaac Wachsmann added a two-run double down the left field line, giving Creighton a commanding lead of 7-0.
South Dakota State responded in the fourth inning with five runs, including a three-run triple by Nolan Grawe. However, Creighton continued to add runs throughout the game. Capece contributed an RBI single in the fourth inning, Gump hit a two-run home run in the fifth, and Joe Washburn added a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Relief pitcher Evan Stratton earned his second win of the season for Creighton after pitching nearly four innings and allowing only one run. Jacob Sjuts started for South Dakota State but took his third loss of the year after surrendering three runs on four hits over just more than an inning.
Creighton’s next games are scheduled against Sacramento State starting Friday at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
