Creighton University’s baseball team lost an 11-9 game to the University of Connecticut on April 4 in Storrs, Connecticut. The defeat marked the final game of their series and moved Creighton’s record to 14-15 overall and 1-2 in Big East play, while Connecticut improved to 17-16 overall and 4-2 in conference games.
The matchup saw several lead changes, with Creighton tying the score twice during the last three innings. Nick Venteicher and Lew Rice started a rally for Creighton in the third inning with singles, followed by Nate McHugh’s two-run triple that gave them an early lead. UConn responded quickly, scoring two runs in the third inning and adding three more in the fourth to take a four-run advantage.
Creighton narrowed the gap with Ben North’s solo home run and a sacrifice fly from Rice. In the seventh inning, Isaac Wachsmann hit a two-run double to center field, driving home North and Connor Capece. Venteicher then delivered an RBI double down the right field line that tied it at seven runs each.
After UConn regained a one-run lead in their half of the seventh inning, Creighton loaded the bases but managed only one run after capitalizing on errors by Connecticut. The Huskies then scored three runs on three hits and two walks during their eighth-inning turn at bat. Wachsmann opened Creighton’s ninth inning with a solo home run but it was not enough for a comeback.
Relief pitcher Shane Curtin took his third loss of the season for Creighton after allowing three runs over just over an inning pitched. UConn closer Greg Shaw III earned his fourth win of the year after pitching two innings despite giving up two runs on three hits.
Looking ahead, Creighton will return home for four consecutive games starting with North Dakota State on Wednesday, April 8 at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
