The Creighton men’s tennis team defeated Villanova with a 7-0 sweep on March 12 in Queens, New York, marking its second BIG EAST sweep in program history.
This win brings Creighton’s season record to 10-6 overall and 2-0 in BIG EAST play. Villanova’s record now stands at 4-8 overall and 0-1 in league action. The Bluejays started strong by securing the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Seniors Kirtan Patel and Yuma Daijima earned their ninth doubles win of the season, defeating Kush Anand and Thomas Wakefield of Villanova, 6-1, at No. 2 doubles. Although Villanova won the top doubles spot, Zachary Kuo and Mathis Dahler clinched the first point for Creighton with a close win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Creighton quickly extended its lead by winning straight sets on four courts. Daijima posted a decisive victory at the top singles position, while Dahler secured another point on court four. Patel clinched the dual match for Creighton with his win on court two, helping secure the team’s sixth consecutive regular season BIG EAST victory dating back to last season.
Sophomore Rocky McKenzie added another point with his performance on court five, while Kuo battled through three sets to win at No. 3 singles. Jack McMahon closed out the match with a three-set victory on court six to complete the sweep.
Creighton is set to conclude its spring break trip to the east coast with a match against defending BIG EAST champions St. John’s in Queens.
