The Creighton men’s tennis team lost to No. 8 Baylor, 7-0, on Mar. 29 at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas. The Bluejays were unable to recover after dropping the doubles point early in the match.
This result moves Creighton’s record to 11-10 for the season, while Baylor improves to 16-7 overall. The Bears secured an early advantage by winning on the top two doubles courts: Calvin Baierl and Davin Badenhorst defeated Yuma Daijima and Kirtan Patel with a score of 6-3, following a win by Arman Zamani and Connor Van Schalkwyk over Jack McMahon and Rocky McKenzie at No. 2 doubles (6-2).
Baylor continued their strong performance in singles play, clinching straight-set victories on courts one, two, and five to secure the dual win. Zsombor Velcz beat Kirtan Patel (6-1, 6-1) at No. 1 singles; Luc Koenig overcame Yuma Daijima (6-2, 6-3) at No. 2; and Calvin Baierl sealed the outcome with a win against Lucas Mommessin (6-1, 6-4) at No.5.
Additional wins for Baylor came from Louis Bowden over Jack McMahon (6-3, 6-1), Drew Hedgecoe against Zachary Kuo (6-2, 6-4), and Alexandru Chirita versus Rocky McKenzie (7-6, 6-2). The final tally was seven matches to none in favor of Baylor.
The Bluejays are scheduled to return to action on Friday, April 3 when they travel for a BIG EAST matchup against Xavier in Cincinnati.
Broader implications of this result show that Creighton will need strong performances as they continue conference play.
