The Creighton men’s tennis team lost 5-2 to St. John’s on March 13 in Queens, New York, in a rematch of last year’s BIG EAST Tournament Finals.
This result brings Creighton’s record to 10-7 overall and 2-1 in BIG EAST play, while St. John’s improves to 11-2 overall and remains undefeated at 3-0 in league action.
St. John’s took an early lead by winning the doubles matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Adam Groves and Semen Agynskyy secured a close 7-6 win on court two, followed by Sergej Zivkovic and Taichi Wakamatsu clinching the doubles point with a 7-5 victory at No. 3.
Creighton responded with Jack McMahon earning a straight sets victory on court six, but St. John’s quickly regained the advantage with a decisive win on court three singles. Kirtan Patel leveled the match for Creighton with another straight sets win at No. 2 singles before Radomi Tomic put St. John’s ahead again with a straight sets victory at No. 5 singles.
Armondo Sotelo sealed the win for St. John’s after a closely contested three-set match on court five, finishing with scores of 7-6, 5-7, and 11-9. Zivkovic added another point for the Red Storm by winning on the top singles court, finalizing the score at 5-2.
Creighton is scheduled to return to action against Omaha on Friday, March 20 at Miracle Hills Tennis Center.
