The Creighton University softball team lost 6-2 to Iowa State on March 18 at the Creighton Softball Stadium.
The loss brings Creighton’s record to 12-17 for the season, while Iowa State improves to 16-10. The game began with two scoreless innings pitched by junior Brooklyn Patchen for the Bluejays. In the third inning, Iowa State took a 1-0 lead after Reagan Bartholomew hit a solo home run. Creighton responded in the bottom of the third with a single from Ella Dalton, an RBI double by Avery Barnard, and an RBI single from freshman Zoey Greenwood, giving them a brief 2-1 advantage.
Iowa State tied the game in the fourth inning when Sydney Malott hit another solo home run, prompting a pitching change for Creighton. The Cyclones then broke the tie in the fifth inning by scoring four runs on five hits. Jessie Clemons started with a leadoff double, followed by RBI singles from Bartholomew, Malott, and Kadence Shepherd that put Iowa State ahead 6-2.
Lauren Schurman of Iowa State closed out the game by retiring nine consecutive Bluejay batters and earned her seventh win of the season. For Creighton, Barnard, Greenwood, and Dalton each recorded one hit. Freshman reliever Ava Drehs took the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits over just over one inning pitched.
Creighton will return to action at home this weekend as they host Villanova for a three-game BIG EAST series starting Friday, March 20.
