Creighton Baseball secured an 8-6 victory over the Tulane Green Wave on March 13, after Nate McHugh hit a two-run home run in the 12th inning during the series opener in New Orleans.
The win brought Creighton’s season record to 6-8, while Tulane dropped to 9-9. The game began with Creighton taking a commanding lead, scoring six runs in the first inning through a combination of hits, walks, and hit batters. Rocco Gump was hit by the first pitch, followed by a double from McHugh and a walk for Teddy Deters. Ben North contributed with a two-run single, and Connor Capece added an RBI grounder. Additional runs came from Isaac Wachsmann’s walk, Lew Rice’s RBI single, and Chris Baillargeon’s two-run single up the middle.
Tulane responded with two runs in their half of the first inning but did not score again until Nolan Nawrocki hit a two-run home run in the sixth. The Bluejays maintained their lead until Tanner Chun tied the game for Tulane with a two-run double in the ninth inning.
Relief pitchers Matt Goldenbaum and Jakob Ruhl played key roles by stranding six Tulane runners across three extra innings. In the top of the 12th, Gump doubled down the left field line before McHugh delivered his decisive home run to left field.
Jakob Ruhl earned his first win of the season after pitching two scoreless innings in relief. Tulane closer Jake Toporek took the loss after allowing both runs in the final frame. The teams are scheduled to continue their three-game series on Saturday.
