McHugh leads Creighton Bluejays to 8-2 win over Omaha Mavericks

Nate McHugh recorded four hits, including a two-run home run, as the Creighton Bluejays defeated the Omaha Mavericks 8-2 on March 18.

The win brings Creighton’s season record to 9-8, while Omaha falls to 7-11. The game saw Omaha take an early lead with Hayden Lewis hitting a solo home run in the second inning and Henry Zipay adding an RBI single in the third. However, Creighton responded in their half of the third inning by loading the bases and scoring two runs—one on a Joe Washburn RBI single and another on an error that allowed McHugh to score.

In the fifth inning, Teddy Deters drew his third walk of the game before McHugh hit his fifth home run of the season, giving Creighton a 4-2 advantage. The Bluejays extended their lead in the seventh inning by scoring four more runs through a combination of hits and walks. Nick Venteicher contributed with an RBI single, Connor Capece added a two-run single, and Nick Bowron hit a sacrifice fly.

Brian Gould earned his first win of the season for Creighton by pitching 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. Brayden Curtis took the loss for Omaha after allowing two runs on three hits.

Creighton will travel to Miami next as they begin a three-game series against the Miami Hurricanes starting Friday, March 20 at 6:00 pm.
