Omaha Baseball lost to Creighton, 8-2, at Charles Schwab Field Omaha on March 18 in a midweek nonconference game.
The result is significant as it marks a setback for the Mavericks, who had recently built momentum with a three-game winning streak in Summit League play. The game also highlights the ongoing rivalry between the two crosstown teams.
The Mavericks took an early lead with Hayden Lewis hitting a solo home run in the second inning and Henry Zipay driving in another run in the third. However, Creighton responded by tying the game in the bottom of the third and then taking control with Nate McHugh’s two-run homer off Brayden Curtis in the fifth inning. The Bluejays added four more runs in the seventh to secure their win. Brian Gould earned the victory for Creighton by pitching nearly three scoreless innings of relief.
Lewis continued his strong performance as he went 2 for 4 and has now recorded seven runs batted in over his last five games. Zipay extended his team-leading on-base streak to ten games. The Mavericks’ record now stands at 7-11 overall and 3-0 in Summit League play, while Creighton improved to 9-8.
The two teams are scheduled to meet twice more this season, on March 24 and April 22. Looking ahead, Omaha will host Northern Colorado for a weekend series at Tal Anderson Field, with all games available via live stream on the Summit League Network.
