Omaha Baseball secured a 12-11 victory over Northern Colorado on March 21, with Chase Diggins delivering a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th inning at Tal Anderson Field.
The game was marked by several comebacks from Omaha, who overcame deficits three times. The Mavericks tied the game in the tenth inning when Diggins scored from second base on a ground ball to shortstop. Head coach Evan Porter credited Diggins for his aggressive baserunning, while Diggins said, “I wanted to hit something hard to the outfield. I wasn’t able to do that, but I was able to find a hole.”
Northern Colorado took an early lead, going up 4-0 in the second inning. Omaha responded with a four-run rally in the fifth and traded five-run sixth innings with their opponent. Jackson Trout hit a three-run home run during Omaha’s rally, and Tyler Bishop added another three-run homer later in the game.
Porter reflected on the team’s resilience after losing the series opener: “Yesterday was a gut check as far as once things start spiraling, it’s really hard to stop,” he said. “Today was about finding a way to win, showing character.”
Every starter for Omaha recorded at least one hit, with Diggins, Edoardo Cornelli, Henry Zipay and Brody Sexton each collecting three hits. The teams are scheduled to play the series finale Sunday afternoon.
The outcome highlights Omaha’s ability to respond under pressure and maintain competitiveness throughout extended play.
