Southern Illinois defeated Omaha Baseball 9-1 on Friday in the opening game of the Gopher Baseball Tournament in Minneapolis. Southern Illinois scored five runs in the first two innings, establishing an early lead that Omaha was unable to overcome.
Omaha, now with a 4-8 record, had baserunners in each of the first six innings but left eight runners stranded during that span. The team’s only run came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Hayden Lewis singled to right field, bringing Tyler Bishop home.
Jackson Trout led Omaha’s offense with a single and a double. Trout has collected 20 hits this season and currently leads the team with a .426 batting average.
Maddox Meyer started for Omaha but struggled early, allowing five runs and seven hits over just 1 1/3 innings. This outing dropped his season record to 1-1; he entered the game with a 1.38 ERA.
Southern Illinois improved its record to 5-7 following this win.
Omaha will continue tournament play at US Bank Stadium on Saturday at 3 p.m. CT against Northwestern.
