The Omaha Hockey team lost to Miami (Ohio) 4-2 in the regular-season finale at Baxter Arena on Saturday night. Despite the defeat, the Mavericks secured a place in the Frozen Faceoff tournament after Arizona State lost to Denver, keeping Omaha in eighth place in the NCHC standings. The team will face league champion North Dakota when the tournament begins on Friday.

Omaha finished the season with 24 points, two more than Arizona State’s 22 points.

During Saturday’s game, both teams scored three goals within five minutes during the first period. Miami took an early lead with a power-play goal six minutes into play. Marcus Nguyen responded for Omaha with his 11th goal of the season, assisted by Samuel Huo. Less than a minute later, Miami regained its lead when Matteo Giampa scored.

In the second period, Myles Hillman tied the game for Omaha with his fifth goal of the season. The score remained even until Miami found the net again with just under two minutes left in the period.

Omaha pulled goalie Simon Latkoczy late in regulation for an extra attacker but conceded an empty-net goal with 1:47 remaining as Miami secured its win.
