The Omaha Mavericks women’s softball team will travel to Grand Forks, North Dakota, for their first Summit League road games of the season, with a doubleheader scheduled for Sunday, April 5 and a single game on Monday, April 6. The change in schedule comes after inclement weather was forecasted in the Grand Forks area.
The series is important as Omaha currently leads the Summit League standings with a record of 24-7 overall and 6-0 in conference play. The team has been recognized nationally, ranking No. 2 in the D1Softball Mid-Major Rankings and No. 3 in the Softball America Mid-Major Power Rankings. Their recent performance includes an eight-game winning streak and a three-game shutout sweep over Kansas City where they outscored their opponent by a combined score of 27-0.
Senior right-handed pitcher Alexis Wiggins was named Kwik Star Summit League Peak Pitcher of the Week after pitching eight shutout innings across two outings last week. She allowed only three hits against Kansas City batters and recorded four strikeouts during that stretch. Wiggins now leads Omaha pitchers with a season record of 10 wins and one loss.
Offensively, Omaha matched last year’s home run total with seven homers against Kansas City last weekend, bringing their season tally to 53—fourth all-time at Omaha. Senior transfers Bailey Sample and Taylor Sedlacek have each posted ten multi-hit games this year; Sample also holds the team’s longest current hitting streak at five consecutive games. Katherine Johnson leads with twelve multi-RBI games while Ava Rongisch, Alyson Edwards, and Sample have each reached base safely in twelve straight contests.
Following last weekend’s dominant showing, Omaha was named Softball on SI’s Team of the Week—the first time receiving this recognition.
After facing North Dakota, Omaha will continue its road trip against St. Thomas starting April 10 in St. Paul, Minnesota.
