The Omaha Mavericks softball team defeated North Dakota State University 8-0 in a five-inning game on March 20 at Connie Claussen Field. Maddia Groff and Grace Hornbuckle combined to allow only two hits, helping Omaha secure the shutout victory in both their home and Summit League opener.
The win marks an important start for the Mavericks, who improved their record to 18-7. Head coach Mike Heard said, “It’s really nice not being in an airport. Love playing at our stadium we have here, love seeing our fans. Our players were really happy to be home.”
Omaha took an early lead in the first inning after Rylinn Groff singled and two walks loaded the bases with one out. Marra Cramer then hit a two-run single to center field. In the second inning, Bailey Sample’s single scored another run before Katherine Johnson hit a three-run home run, her seventh of the season.
North Dakota State threatened in the second inning with runners on second and third and no outs, but Maddia Groff struck out two batters and forced a groundout to end the threat. Omaha continued its offensive momentum by scoring two more runs in the third inning with a single from Rylinn Groff.
Six of Omaha’s eight runs were scored with two outs during the game. The Mavericks have now homered in each of their last 13 games and in 22 of their first 25 games this season.
Heard said, “I thought Maddia pitched well, I thought Grace played well. Offense was productive.” He added, “Overall, I thought we handled (the home opener) like a very mature team.”
Omaha and North Dakota State are scheduled to continue their series at Connie Claussen Field.
