Omaha Softball finished the Trailblazer Classic with a 3-1 record after splitting two games on March 14 in St. George, Utah.

The Mavericks (17-7) secured a decisive 12-2 win over Utah Tech in five innings following an earlier 9-8 loss to Brigham Young University. The results concluded Omaha’s participation in the tournament.

In the victory against Utah Tech, Alexis Wiggins pitched a one-hitter, allowing only a single in the fourth inning. Omaha took control early by scoring four runs in the second inning and never trailed. Bailey Sample contributed with a two-run single as part of a three-run fourth inning for Omaha. In the fifth, Sammy Schmidt hit a three-run home run and Taylor Sedlacek added a two-run homer—her ninth of the season, leading the team. Schmidt also had an RBI single earlier and drove in four runs for her second consecutive game with four runs batted in.

During the matchup against BYU, Ava Rongisch hit two home runs to center field, including a grand slam that gave Omaha a brief lead in the sixth inning. However, BYU responded with five home runs overall, including two from Hailey Morrow and another from Bre Townsend that put BYU ahead for good in the seventh inning. Despite back-to-back doubles by Sedlacek and Sample to start Omaha’s half of the seventh, they were unable to bring home the tying run.

Maddia Groff, who had thrown a no-hitter against BYU on Friday during a 9-0 win, allowed eight earned runs on Saturday and was charged with the loss.

Omaha will begin Summit League play Friday with its home opener against North Dakota State. Tickets are available at OMavs.com/Tickets or by phone.
