Omaha Softball opened its weekend at the Trailblazer Classic with a no-hitter against Brigham Young University and an extra-innings win over Utah Tech, according to a March 13 announcement.
The team’s performance included standout pitching and timely home runs, helping Omaha improve its season record. Maddia Groff pitched a five-inning no-hitter in a 9-0 victory over BYU, allowing only two baserunners and striking out six. Later that day, Groff also earned the win in relief against Utah Tech by pitching three perfect innings as Omaha came back from a four-run deficit to win 6-5 in eight innings.
The Omaha offense contributed five home runs across both games. Taylor Sedlacek hit her team-leading eighth homer of the season with a two-run shot against BYU, while Sammy Schmidt added a three-run home run and finished with four runs batted in. Ava Rongisch also hit a three-run homer for Omaha.
In the second game, Omaha trailed Utah Tech 5-1 before Alyson Edwards homered in the fifth inning. Katherine Johnson tied the game with a three-run home run in the sixth. Johnson later scored on Haley Wilwerding’s sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to give Omaha its first lead. The game ended when Omaha turned a double play.
Omaha is scheduled to face BYU and Utah Tech again on Saturday, with the first game set to begin at noon Central Time.
