Omaha Softball will face Creighton on March 24 at Connie Claussen Field in the first of two matchups between the cross-town rivals this season. The Mavericks, who began Summit League play with a three-game sweep over North Dakota State, enter the game with a record of 20-7 and are currently on a seven-game homestand.
The meeting holds significance as both teams are coming off winning streaks: Omaha has won its last four games, while Creighton has won three straight. The Mavericks are ranked second in the D1Softball Mid-Major Poll and third in the Softball America Mid-Major Rankings. Historically, Omaha trails Creighton 13-20 all-time but has claimed victory in three of their last five encounters, including sweeping both games last season.
Several connections link the programs. Right-handed pitcher Alexis Wiggins started her college career at Creighton before joining Omaha. Assistant coach Jen Brauer played nearly 200 games for Creighton and was named to the 2014 BIG EAST All-Academic Team.
Junior left-handed pitcher Maddia Groff was recently recognized as Kwik Star Summit League Peak Pitcher of the Week after pitching 6.2 scoreless innings across two appearances against North Dakota State, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out ten batters.
Of note, eight out of twelve Mavericks from Nebraska hail from the Omaha Metro area. The team has also hit home runs in fifteen consecutive games dating back to February 22 against Kennesaw State under head coach Mike Heard.
The Mavericks will conclude their homestand with a three-game series against Kansas City beginning March 27. All upcoming games will be streamed on the Summit League Network.
