Omaha Softball secured an 8-0 five-inning win against Kansas City on Mar. 28 at Connie Claussen Field, marking the team’s seventh consecutive victory.
The Mavericks, now holding a record of 23-7 overall and 5-0 in the Summit League, will aim for a series sweep in their next game. The match was notable for challenging wind conditions that made extra-base hits difficult, as all of Omaha’s seven hits were singles.
Head coach Mike Heard said his team showed strong discipline at the plate during a pivotal third inning when all eight runs were scored with two outs. “We stressed that pretty hard,” Heard said. “We earned a lot of those runs with our plate discipline, making sure the ball was in the zone.”
Omaha had left runners stranded in scoring position during each of the first two innings before capitalizing on Kansas City’s errors and pitching struggles in the third. With two outs and a runner on second base, nine consecutive Mavericks reached safely through walks, hit-by-pitches, singles, and errors. Alyson Edwards drove in the first run after being hit by a pitch with bases loaded; Sammy Schmidt followed with an RBI walk; Marra Cramer scored on a wild pitch; two more runs came from a throwing error; Taylor Sedlacek added a two-run single to left field—the only ball to leave the infield that inning—and Bailey Sample finished off scoring with an infield single.
Pitcher Alexis Wiggins led Omaha defensively by throwing a one-hitter without issuing any walks and striking out three batters. “I thought she really pounded the zone, got ahead of hitters, challenged hitters,” Heard said. “She understood the conditions. I thought she did everything we asked of her.” With this performance Wiggins improved her season record to 9-1.
Heard also commented on Wiggins’ progress: “She’s always been able to pitch well, the ball moves,” he said, “but her command has been better this year.”
