Omaha Women’s Tennis secured a 7-0 victory over Chicago State on Friday, marking their fourth sweep of the season. The Mavericks improved their record to 7-6 while Chicago State remained winless at 0-14.
The team quickly clinched the doubles point. Sophomores Nina Wiese and Katelynn Kock, as well as freshmen Corinne Barber and Grace Greenwald, each won their matches 6-0 at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles respectively.
In singles play, Nina Wiese was the last Maverick to finish her match. She lost the first set 6-3 against Camila Sanchez but came back with a 6-4 win in the second set. With Omaha having already secured the overall victory, they played a match tiebreaker instead of a full third set. After trailing at match point, Wiese rallied to win two consecutive points and took the tiebreaker 11-9.
Junior Khayli Buckels earned her seventh singles win of the spring in the No. 1 position against Karolina Skowronska. Buckels won the first set 6-4 and overcame a deficit in the second set before winning a tiebreaker 7-2.
“Solid start to the weekend,” head coach Adam Summitt said. “Happy with the effort and results. We continue to play great doubles, and it was great to have Corinne (Barber) and Grace (Greenwald) get a win. Chicago State competed well in singles. Our team bounced back from a weekend off. We will have a real fight tomorrow at Drake and we are looking forward to the challenge.”
Omaha is scheduled to face Drake next in Des Moines, Iowa.
Singles results included wins by Katelynn Kock (6-1, 6-2), Jacqueline Pearsall (6-3, 6-1), Shelby Smith (6-2, 6-2), and Summer Shannon (6-0, 6-1). In doubles action, Buckels paired with Shannon for an unfinished match while Barber and Greenwald recorded another shutout.
