Rep. Don Bacon, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Nebraska’s 2nd district since 2017, recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing U.S. trade policy, constitutional authority over tariffs, and national security interests abroad.
On November 5, 2025, Bacon commented on trade relations between the United States, Argentina, and China. He stated, “It does irritate many in Nebraska, justifiably, that after we did the $40 billion loan to Argentina, China then made a huge soybean buy from Argentina, not America. China is upset because of our tariffs on them….When we are in a tariff war, people strike back.”
Shortly after this post, Bacon expressed his disagreement with current executive actions on tariffs by referencing constitutional powers: “I disagree with the President on tariffs. Article One of the Constitution gives Congress the authority to determine tariffs.” This remark underscores ongoing debates regarding which branch of government should set tariff policy.
In another statement made later that day concerning foreign affairs and defense priorities for the United States and its allies in Europe and Eurasia, Bacon wrote: “It is in our national security interest that Ukraine prevails. We are the indispensable voice in the world.”
Bacon has served as Nebraska’s representative in Congress since 2017 after replacing Brad Ashford. Born in Momence, Illinois in 1963 and currently residing in Papillion at age 59, he holds degrees from Northern Illinois University (BA) and the University of Phoenix.
