Rep. Don Bacon, currently representing Nebraska’s 2nd district in the U.S. Congress, has recently addressed issues concerning U.S. foreign policy and the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine through a series of social media posts. Bacon, who began serving in Congress in 2017 after succeeding Brad Ashford, drew on his military background and experience to comment on current events.
On July 13, 2025, Bacon referenced historical parallels in a brief statement: “That is what shortsighted people said in the 1930s too.” The post alludes to criticism of contemporary policies by drawing a comparison with attitudes prior to World War II.
Later that day, on July 14, 2025, Bacon responded directly to questions about American involvement in Ukraine. He stated: “I served for 30 years in AF. But, your question is quite dumb. Ukraine is asking for no American troops but is asking for our weapons to stop a barbaric invasion.” Here he emphasized that Ukraine seeks military aid rather than direct deployment of U.S. forces.
In another post on July 14, Bacon elaborated on his stance regarding the conflict’s moral dimensions: “Your position treats the two nations the same. Russia is the invader and Ukraine is the victim. Russia bombs Ukrainian cities every night. There is no moral equivalence here. What is needed is moral clarity and to help the victim win.” In this message he underscored his view that clear distinctions should be made between aggressor and victim states.
Don Bacon was born in Momence, Illinois in 1963 and now resides in Papillion. He graduated from Northern Illinois University with a BA in 1984 and also attended the University of Phoenix.
