Rep. Don Bacon (NE-02) has issued a statement regarding the recent Reconciliation Bill vote, addressing concerns and outlining the bill’s implications.
Bacon emphasized that “no expectant mothers, single parents, children, disabled, or elderly are losing SNAP or Medicaid benefits.” He noted that misinformation was being spread to alarm people unnecessarily.
The bill aims to strengthen existing programs through audits and ensure that only eligible individuals receive benefits. It also mandates work and volunteer requirements for able-bodied adults without dependents. Bacon assured that “those who are eligible for Medicaid and SNAP are not touched by this bill.”
He highlighted the permanence of tax cuts within the bill, which would prevent an average Nebraska family of four earning $80,000 from facing a tax increase of about $1,700.
The legislation includes significant defense spending increases—approximately $144 billion over four years—to maintain military readiness. Additionally, it allocates around $90 billion in total border security investments and introduces a new $12 billion grant fund to support state border security efforts.
Bacon concluded by stating his collaboration with Republican leadership to address Nebraskans’ needs through this legislation, acknowledging that while the bill is not perfect, it reflects their efforts.
