Rep. Don Bacon, a U.S. Congressman representing Nebraska’s 2nd district since 2017, addressed several issues related to tariffs and international relations in a series of posts on September 16, 2025.
In one post from that day, Bacon wrote, “You’re NUTZ.” (September 16, 2025). In another message later that morning, he commented on the constitutional role of Congress regarding tariffs: “Article One of the Constitution gives Congress the authority to determine tariffs. The President has to work with Congress on tariffs. Further, tariffs are a tax on the American consumer.” (September 16, 2025). By the afternoon, Bacon added a critique directed at U.S. foreign policy: “I hope the Administration learns that treating Allies with huge disrespect comes at a price.” (September 16, 2025).
Bacon’s comments highlight ongoing debates over trade policy and executive-legislative relations in Washington. His assertion about congressional authority is rooted in Article One of the U.S. Constitution, which assigns tariff-setting powers to Congress rather than solely to the executive branch.
Don Bacon has represented Nebraska’s 2nd District since defeating Brad Ashford in 2017 and resides in Papillion after being born in Momence, Illinois in 1963. He holds degrees from Northern Illinois University and the University of Phoenix.
