Rep. Don Bacon, who represents Nebraska’s 2nd district in the U.S. Congress, used his social media account on October 1, 2025, to comment on the recent government shutdown and actions taken by Congressional leadership.
In a post published at 19:23 UTC, Bacon stated, “.@HouseGOP & I passed a clean, short-term CR but Schumer & Jeffries catered to their far-left base & shut down the government. I thank Dem Senators @SenCortezMasto, @SenFettermanPA, & @SenAngusKing for choosing Americans over party. Time for Democrat leadership to follow.” He attributed responsibility for the shutdown to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries while expressing appreciation for certain Democratic senators.
Shortly after, Bacon shared another message quoting Ezra Levin of Indivisible: “Senator Schumer should step aside as leader. Every Democrat in the Senate should call for him to do so, and begin making plans for new leadership immediately.” -Ezra Levin, Co-Executive Director of Indivisible (9/15/25) This statement called for new Democratic leadership in the Senate.
Later that day at 19:25 UTC, Bacon addressed constituents regarding essential services during the shutdown: “Our team is committed to keeping you informed during the Democrat Leadership shutdown. Essential services like Social Security, Medicare & Medicaid, SNAP, VA benefits, student aid & more will continue.
Stay tuned to our social media & website for updates:”
Bacon has represented Nebraska’s 2nd District since 2017 after succeeding Brad Ashford. Born in Momence, Illinois in 1963 and currently residing in Papillion at age 59, he holds degrees from Northern Illinois University and the University of Phoenix.
