Rep. Don Bacon, who has represented Nebraska’s 2nd congressional district in the U.S. Congress since 2017, shared a series of posts on social media highlighting issues of national security, international alliances, and his military background.
On October 9, 2025, Bacon expressed concern about the potential closure of several U.S.-funded international broadcasters. He wrote, “We should not be shutting down Voice of America, Radio Free Europe. Radio Free Asia and Middle East Broadcasting Networks. We need these in our national security toolkit. Russia, China, North Korea, Iran and Cuba don’t want their citizens to know the truth. Information is power.”
In another post dated October 10, 2025, Bacon commented on Finland’s recent accession to NATO, stating, “Finland is a great new member of NATO. The free world is stronger.”
On the same day, he also referenced his own military service with the 55th Wing by stating, “The Fighting Fifty-Fifth! Where the sun never sets! I’m a four-time veteran of this great wing.”
Bacon was born in Momence, Illinois in 1963 and currently resides in Papillion. He graduated from Northern Illinois University in 1984 and later from the University of Phoenix. Before entering Congress by succeeding Brad Ashford in 2017, Bacon had a lengthy military career.
U.S.-funded broadcasters like Voice of America and Radio Free Europe have historically played roles in providing uncensored news to audiences living under authoritarian regimes. The expansion of NATO with Finland as a member marks a significant shift for European security dynamics.
